TL;DW

I created an app that would allow total beginners to start an exercise regimen that they could do anywhere and anytime that made sense to them.

Moodboard for Fitted

Most of us remember what it was like when we were kids with boundless energy and enthusiasm. When even the simple things evoked curiosity and excitement. What if doing new exercises could spark that type of joy? I started looking in forum boards for hints of other people's most vivid memories of being a kid and used their memories to create a mood board to guide my UI’s direction. I wanted to induce that same sense of simplistic curiosity and excitement.

Initial Wireframes

The essence of the design was to let people make their own regimen by providing them with the tools to learn about new exercises, add them to their “workout template”, and begin exercising.

I created the initial wireframes for my design using Balsamiq.

Wireframes at different fidelities

I developed my wireframes into greater fidelity while focusing on general composition, visual hierarchy, and the overall design patterns.

I wanted color and typography that would mesh with the playful atmosphere I was going for while still maintaining a level of professionalism and simplicity that would be to the liking of adults.

I created icons that better suited my mostly stroke-based design than what I was able to source.

Larger Breakpoints

After deciding on the basic interactions and gestures, I started developing my design for larger breakpoints.

Takeaways

There were loads to learn from this case study. Seeing how the use of appropriate grids made such a massive difference in even lower fidelity settings was illuminating. All of the color theory that went into selecting colors appropriate for the design was also very informative. I plan on continuing the design process for this project as I am sure there are loads more to learn.
